Beaujolais region and a force in promoting Beaujolais in the U S passed away on January 4 after suffering a stroke at his home in Romanèche Thorins near Lyon the Agence France Presse reports He was 86 Duboeuf formed his company Les Vins Georges Duboeuf in 1964 Part nering with importer W J Deutsch Sons now Deutsch Family Wine Spirits in the early 1980s he built a strong following for his wines in the U S in large part by creating a sensa tion around the release of Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau each year on the third Thursday in November a tradition that continues today With a network of 300 growers in Beaujolais Georges Duboeuf eventu ally soared to become a million case wine brand in the U S While the brand subsequently declined to below 200000 cases as Nouveaus popularity waned it has seen renewed growth in recent years under new importer Quintessential which started handling it in the U S in 2016 Duboeuf remained active in promot ing his wines and the Beaujolais region well into his eighties retiring in 2018 His son Franck has succeeded him as head of the company which now produces about 30 million bottles annually Bartender Educator Gaz ReganDies At 68Drinks industry legend Gary gaz Regan a longtime bartender educator and author often credited for helping lead the cocktail revolution died on November 15 following complications from cancer He was 68 Regan was born in Rochdale England on September 18 1951 and gained his first experience behind the bar working at his familys pubs in Lancashire from age 14 He moved to the U S in the early 1970s to bartend in Manhattan eventually managing the North Star Pub where he became known for his deep spirits knowledge Regan later moved to Cornwall on Hudson where he led a bartending course called Cock tails in the Country In 2012 Regan won the Lifetime Achievement Award from Tales of the Cocktails Spirited Awards He also saw accolades for his writing throughout his life he wrote a drinks column for Food Arts in the 1990s and was also a cock tail columnist for Wine Enthusiast Cheers Food Wine and Malt Advo cate now Whisky Advocate But he was most known for his biweekly column The Cocktailian published in the San Francisco Chronicle Addi tionally Regan wrote a total of 18 books on drinks bartending and cocktails including The Bartenders Bible and The Joy of Mixology When behind the bar Regan often made his own syrups and fruit juices and was the creator of Regans No 6 Orange bitters He also often collabo rated with spirits companies on cocktail competitions and brand sponsorships In 2018 he launched the Worldwide Bartender Database an online portal for bartenders and spirits producers Regan is survived by his wife Amy Gallagher Al Young Of Four Roses Passes Away At 77Industry veteran Al Young known as an ambassador for and historian of Kentucky Bourbon passed away on December 25 at the age of 77 Young began his career at Joseph E Seagram and Sons in 1967 working at distill eries in Kentucky and Indiana before becoming distillery manager at Four Roses in 1990 In 2007 he became the Four Roses brand ambassador traveling the country and the world to share his voluminous knowledge of the 130 year old Bourbon brand Young published his book Four Roses The Return of a Whiskey Legend in 2010 and was in the process of updating its third edition at his passing Wine Industry Veteran Jim Caudill DiesJim Caudill director of marketing communications at Treasury Wine Estates passed away December 4 Caudill was a widely known veteran of the wine industry with decades of experience in public relations and marketing having worked at Jackson Family Wines Brown Forman The Hess Collection and most recently Treasury Wine Estates At Trea sury Caudill did public relations work for brands
